Consumer health data privacy policy
Some US state laws, including Washington's My Health My Data Act, protect consumer health data: information that identifies or reveals your past, present or future physical or mental health. What you write in Significance Balance about your feelings and your relationship can reveal your mental health, so we treat it as consumer health data. This page says what we collect, why, where it comes from, who receives it, and how to use your rights. Our general privacy policy covers everything else.
Significance Balance is not a health or medical service. It gives no diagnosis, treatment or medical advice, and it never asks for health records: no medical history, diagnoses, medications, or data from health apps and wearables. The only consumer health data involved is what the law counts as such — what your own words about feelings and your relationship could reveal about your mental health.
What we collect
- your profile — your name, age and gender, your partner's name, age and gender, how long you have been together, your occupation, your hobbies and whether there are children;
- the free-text context you write for each relationship stage;
- the questions you are asked and every answer you give;
- your coach-chat messages and the rewrites you type in the reframing exercise;
- what is worked out from them: balance scores, recommendations, weekly roll-ups and the AI-written coaching text;
- a piece of AI text you choose to report as offensive, which may repeat details from the above;
- whether you have allowed the AI features, and when.
Everything except the last two is stored on your phone. It leaves the phone only as the text of a request when you use an AI feature, and our servers do not keep a copy of that request or its answer.
Why we collect it
- To provide the AI features you use — the session questions, scoring your answers into a recommendation, the coach chat and the practice exercises. A language model writes them, and it needs the text above to do so.
- To act on a report of offensive AI text you sent us.
- To honour your consent choice: our servers refuse to forward any text while the AI features are off.
We do not use it for advertising, we do not build a profile of you from it, and we do not sell consumer health data.
Where it comes from
From you, as you type it into the app, and from what the app and the AI work out from it. We get it from no one else.
Who receives it
Only processors acting on our instructions. We have no affiliates, and no one receives it for their own purposes.
- Mistral AI receives the text of each AI request and returns the answer. We have switched off its use of our requests to train its models.
- Google Firebase runs our servers. It carries each AI request to the provider without storing it, and stores reports of offensive AI text and your consent record.
No consumer health data goes to our crash-reporting provider, to Apple or Google as app stores, or to anyone through this website.
Your consent
Nothing is sent to an AI provider until you allow it on the consent screen the app shows before the first AI feature. You can withdraw that consent at any time with the AI switch in Settings; from then on our servers refuse to forward any text. Withdrawing does not delete what is already on your phone — the next section covers that.
Your rights
- Deletion. Delete all my data, under Privacy & data in Settings, erases your profile, the context you wrote, every answer and your whole history from the phone at once. To delete what our servers hold — your reports, your consent record and the anonymous identifier they are filed under — write to us, and we also instruct Mistral AI to delete what it processed for us.
- Access. You can ask whether we collect, share or sell your consumer health data, for a copy of what we hold, and for the list of everyone we have shared it with.
- Withdrawing consent — the AI switch in Settings, as above, or by writing to us.
To use any of these rights, write to support@significancebalance.com. Tell us which platform you are on, and we will confirm your request and answer it within 45 days. If we need longer, we will tell you why within those 45 days, and take no more than 45 days more. We do not charge for it, and you will not be treated differently for using these rights.
Appeal. If we refuse a request, reply to our answer with the word "appeal" and we will review the decision and tell you the outcome within 45 days. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact the Washington State Attorney General at atg.wa.gov/file-complaint.
